Omnibus Report for the week of October 15, 2017

We have three omnibuses to preview this weekend all three scheduled to be released on Tuesday, October 17, 2017. We will follow this report up with an unboxing of all three.

Starting off this list is the conclusion to DC's New 52 Justice League and that is Justice League: The Darkseid War Saga Omnibus by Geoff Johns, Jason Fabok and Francis Manapul. Weighing in at 512 pages this volume collects Justice League #40-50, Justice League: Darkseid War Special #1, Divergence #1, and Darkseid War 1-6.

I've managed to remain mainly spoiler-free on the story here. I will say, I have read Trinity War and Forever Evil, and I found both those stories a lot of fun so I am expecting this to be a lot of fun too.

Also for DC fans this week, comes Batman/The Flash: The Button Deluxe Edition by Tom King, Joshua Williamson, Jason Fabok, and Howard Porter. This volume is 104 pages and collects Batman #21-22 and The Flash #21-22.

This story sounds like a great deal of fun but I am going to hold out for the omnibus that will probably be produced four or five years from now.

Next we move into Marvel Land and in advance of the upcoming Thor: Ragnarok, Marvel is releasing the sequel to the Planet Hulk Omnibus, which I have been covering on my YouTube channel here:
And the sequel to Planet Hulk is massive, weighing in at 1,304 pages, Hulk: World War Hulk Omnibus by Greg Pak, Peter David, Jeff Parker, John Romita, Gary Frank, Leonard Kirk, and Carlo Pagulayan collects World War Hulk(WWH) Prologue: World Breaker, WWH #1-5, Incredible Hulk 106-111, Iron Man 19-20, Avengers: Initiative #4-5, Irredeemable Ant-Man #10, WWH:X-Men #1-3, Ghost Rider #12-13, Heroes for Hire #11-15, Punisher War Journal #12, WWH: Gamma Corps #1-4, WWH:Front Line #1-6, WWH: Aftersmash One-shot , WWH Aftersmash: Warbound #1-5, and Planet Hulk Saga.

Whew! Are you exhausted yet?

Finally, Thor by Walt Simonson Omnibus (Mighty Thor) coming in at 1192 pages collects Thor #337-355, 357-369, 371-382 and Baldar the Brave #1-4. The Walt Simonson Thor one is one of the most celebrated in the history of the Marvel Comics character. This run is the introduction of Beta Ray Bill and possibly Frog Thor. When Walt Simonson took over in 1983, Thor became a surprise hit and I cannot wait to tear into one of the most beloved Thor runs in history.
Update: Shortly after I published this blog, a YouTuber I follow, Just Some Guy, posted a human interest video about Walt Simonson revealing the character and class this man has. Please go watch Just Some Guy's video here:

From The Pile Episode 4: The Flash 42:"Night of the Mechanical Zombies"

Today I bring you The Flash #42 from 1990 by William Messner-Loebs, Greg La Rocque, and Jose Martin Jr. "Night of the Mechanical Zombies" starts off with a nice philosophical discussion comparing a computer's creation of cyber-space-time with a human being's creation of space-time. Unfortunately, I didn't know all the characters. I didn't read the Flash. Even now I have read very little Flash and am mostly familiar with the character through the 1990 and current TV show. That being said, I really enjoyed this story. It had so many cool elements to it, like the opening monolog I mentioned above and then we have a woman whose name I never learned, who is inhabited by the ghost of an ancient Irish Bard named Seamus. We get a brief glimpse of Wally West's then-girlfriend who is a supermodel who sells cat food named Connie. And then we have our heroine who's name is Tina, a former girlfriend of Wally West. This story does a great job of buil...

Movie Tie-In #1: Thor and Beta Ray Bill

On the eve of the opening of Thor: Ragnarok we dive into Walt Simonson's Thor Omnibus and take a look at the first four stories which introduce us to Beta Ray Bill and the idea that anyone who is worthy can wield Thor's hammer, Mjolnir. Thor (as Doctor Donald Blake) is summoned by Nick Fury when  S.H.I.E.L.D. detects a very fast moving object headed toward our solar system. An object that devours suns! When an imminent threat appears a half a galaxy away, Nick Fury seeks out the Mighty Thor! Thor heads off into space while in Asgard a very unhappy Sif is seeking a battle worthy of her skills to take her mind off of Thor. Upon reaching the fast approaching space ship, Thor is mistaken for a demon by Beta Ray Bill whose mission is to protect his people that have been under demonic attack for millennia. Thor is transformed into Donald Blake and loses Mjolnir which has reverted back into his walking stick. Finding the walking stick, Beta Ray Bill stri...
