The Living End by "Unkie" Dev Quin and Michael "Park" Lockwood

One of the great joys of getting these Comics Cubes from Half-Price books, usually for around $10, is the joy of discovering what's inside!

In my newest show on Super Comic Fun Time! on YouTube (sadly Vid.me is no more, gone before I could even post longer content!), Breakout! I discovered a few, what I had hoped to be, gems amidst the flood of gems.

One of these was called The Living End, published by dead fish comics and featuring great cover art of a superhero saying, "If I'm dead...Then why am I still alive?!" And also a line above the title blaring, "Nature's cruelest hoax!" And finally a crawl promising, "This Comic Will Blow Your Mind!"

The cover does a very good job of doing what a good comic book cover should do, it grabs your attention and even though it is over the top and ridiculous, it makes you want to pick it up and read it.

And read it I did!

The story is broken into five chapters:

Fate of the Damned!
Challenge of the Turnips!
Yonder My Enemy!
When Titans Tussle...in BED!

Fate of the Damned! starts with the death of main character, Greg Yeoman after he served to miss a turtle crossing the road. As Greg lay dying we learn that the turtle is none other than...Well we don't know but an ancient hero who was long ago transformed into a turtle. Because of Greg Yeoman's selfless attempt to miss hitting the turtle, the turtle calls the dying man back to life and grants him super powers, transforming Greg into The Living End!

Sadly, Greg only has the powers, and his life between the hours of sundown to sunset.

Unfortunately for the turtle, Greg is a little upset at him for causing his death and he boots the turtle high into the air.

Next in the Challenge of the Turnips, Greg decides he wants to try out his new superpowers by transforming a turnip truck into a chicken, unfortunately, it is the same night a gang of turnip thieves have decided to rob the turnip truck.

The Living End easily defeats the bad guys but his deed of heroism is witnessed by a beautiful woman. The two hit it off and head back to her place.

In the meantime, in Yonder My Enemy, the turtle lands in France, a little bummed out because he thought Greg Yeoman would be so grateful to have his life back he would transform the turtle back into is former heroic state. And again, unfortunately, the turtle lands in front of a cave inhabited by the turtle's ancient enemy. Doubly unfortunate is the writers hadn't yet decided who this supreme supervillain is yet. And so we leave the turtle in a state of indenture.

Finally we return to our hero in his new girlfriend's apartment. Deidre Kelly (the girlfriend) suggests ordering a pizza but why order a pizza when The Living End can conjure on magically and impress his new girlfriend at the same time?

After dinner we find our hero and heroine playing a game that ends up with them in bed. Only what will happen when the sun rises?

Past this we get some nonsense from Greece and then a deleted scene that was probably never in the story in the first place.

My thoughts on this is it is pretty good. It's pretty fun. I think the story could be better if the writers had shown some restraint but luckily when recapitulating the story, I don't remember much of the over-the-top stuff.

I don't know if there were any more issues because there appears to be a very popular Australian punk rock bad by the same name.

Even though I more or less spoiled the story up above I still think this comic is worth getting if you can. The cover art alone is worth it and it is kind of a fun send up.

I hope these writers and artists have worked on other comics and that they have refined their style. I think played a little straighter this would truly be "The Single Greatest Comic Book Ever!" as is also promised on the cover.

Be sure to check out SCFT's new show, Breakout too!

From The Pile Episode 4: The Flash 42:"Night of the Mechanical Zombies"

Today I bring you The Flash #42 from 1990 by William Messner-Loebs, Greg La Rocque, and Jose Martin Jr. "Night of the Mechanical Zombies" starts off with a nice philosophical discussion comparing a computer's creation of cyber-space-time with a human being's creation of space-time. Unfortunately, I didn't know all the characters. I didn't read the Flash. Even now I have read very little Flash and am mostly familiar with the character through the 1990 and current TV show. That being said, I really enjoyed this story. It had so many cool elements to it, like the opening monolog I mentioned above and then we have a woman whose name I never learned, who is inhabited by the ghost of an ancient Irish Bard named Seamus. We get a brief glimpse of Wally West's then-girlfriend who is a supermodel who sells cat food named Connie. And then we have our heroine who's name is Tina, a former girlfriend of Wally West. This story does a great job of buil...

Omnibus Report for the week of October 15, 2017

We have three omnibuses to preview this weekend all three scheduled to be released on Tuesday, October 17, 2017. We will follow this report up with an unboxing of all three. Starting off this list is the conclusion to DC's New 52 Justice League and that is  Justice League: The Darkseid War Saga Omnibus by Geoff Johns, Jason Fabok and Francis Manapul. Weighing in at 512 pages this volume collects Justice League #40-50, Justice League: Darkseid War Special #1, Divergence #1, and Darkseid War 1-6. I've managed to remain mainly spoiler-free on the story here. I will say, I have read Trinity War and Forever Evil, and I found both those stories a lot of fun so I am expecting this to be a lot of fun too. Also for DC fans this week, comes  Batman/The Flash: The Button Deluxe Edition by Tom King, Joshua Williamson, Jason Fabok, and Howard Porter. This volume is 104 pages and collects Batman #21-22 and The Flash #21-22. This story sounds like a great deal of fun but I am...

Jack Kirby's Fourth World Omnibus Drops 12/12/2017

As I said in one of my previous videos, the main reason I started this channel is to keep other people who interested in omnibus editions up-to-date with upcoming titles. Especially the ones I am most interested in. Now at any given time there are a boatload of new and reprinted omnibuses coming out as well as collected editions, collected editions usually being the trade paperback that generally contains 6-8 issues of a given title. Sometimes collected editions are lumped in with omnibuses but an omnibus is usually an event comic that contains the main event title and all the related tie-ins. Other times an omnibus will contain an entire run of a title or, as in the case of my most highly anticipated omnibus of the next few months, an entire line of comics. Currently scheduled to be released on December 12, 2017 and part of the Kirby 100 celebration is  Jack Kirby's Fourth World Omnibus   is my number one 'get' of all the upcoming omnibuses. It is impossible to und...
