Super Comic Fun Time!

The Comic Book World is replete with things. At least three Things I can think of off the top of my head: The Man-Thing, The Swamp Thing, and Ben Grimm aka The Thing. And it's a well known rule of academia that if you have three things that may be only tangentially related, you can make a class out of it! Outside of comics we have a few cultural "Things", in 1893, Ambrose Bierce published a story called The Damned Thing about a hunter who comes to discover he is hunting some sort of Thing that is a color outside the range of human sight. In 1951, Howard Hawks released a movie, an opera, really, an opera without music called The Thing from Another World starring James Arnes in the title role of The Thing. Happy Halloween Comic Readers! So, in supplementation with Super Comic Fun Time's "As Spectacular As It Gets" Halloween Special we look at some horror comics! Or, at least, what we hoped would be horror comics: First up is True Blood #1 from IDW written by Ann Nocenti and Michael McMillian. True Blood was a TV series that ran on HBO from 2008 - 2014 based on a series of novels known as the Sookie Stackhouse mysteries. A competent comic but the world is a little obvious. More groan-worthy than fun. In this world, a synthetic blood is created and the vampires come out of their coffins. There are no subtle allusions going on here, it is all in your face. Vampires are just like us, except if it weren't for a synthetic blood product known as True Blood, then the vampires would be preying on us. So, this week I didn't have anything ordered but I still have a couple of boxes waiting around for a video opening. Arriving at my door on July 18, 2017, the Doctor Strange Sorcerer Supreme Omnibus Vol. 1 collects Doctor Strange Sorcerer Supreme 1-40 and Ghost Rider 12 and weighing in at 1,064 page, this volume looks beautiful. I'm not sure exactly what the story is for this series but it appears that Doctor Strange is either dead, or thought to be dead. Flipping through the book, the pages look beautiful and Doctor Strange is sporting a wild hairdo on some pages that I highlight in the video. It even looks like Clea is back! As always, this episode features a poorly drawn cartoon and a small fight against the "Uhs!" I think they are finally in retreat! But ever must we remain vigilant! This week on the omnibus front there are very slim pickings but one of them looks to be a real gem for DC Comics fans. On 10/24/2017  Grayson: The Superspy Omnibus by Tom King, Tim Seeley, and Mikel Janin. This grand tome weighs in at 792 pages and collects Grayson 1-20, Grayson:Futures End 1, Secret Origins 8, Grayson Annual 1-3, Robin War 1-2, and Nightwing: Rebirth 1. Dick Grayson is one of the oldest and most beloved characters in the history of DC Comics starting out in 1940 as Batman's sidekick and has probably had the most career changes of any long term DC character except for Jimmy Olson, most probably. I first met Dick Grayson as Burt Ward portrayed him in the 1960s Batman TV series. As seen on TV, Dick was an energetic teen who was nearly as intelligent as Batman himself. Today, Darkseid landed on my doorstep, well, Justice League: The Darkseid War Saga Omnibus to be a little more accurate. In front of your dazzled eyes, we open the box! We flip through the book! We make mostly relevant comments! We are awed by some of the art we see! If you've already read this in it's original single issue state, let me know what you thought!

This week I picked DC Comics Justice League International(JLI) Annual #3 by Keith Griffen and J. M. DeMatteis. One reason I chose this title is I will probably be a little Marvel-centric for the next few videos and I wanted to throw a little love to the die-hard DC Fans. And you have to be a die-hard DC fan for this one, at least the main story. Around the World with the JLI takes up 33 pages of this book and nearly nothing happens. The story opens on the beautiful Pacific island of Kooey Kooey Kooey where a character named Herb is trying to convince his chief to allow the JLI to have an embassy on their island as a way of keeping the Soviets and Americans from attempting to establish a base there because Kooey Kooey Kooey is strategically located. What its strategic importance is, we aren't told. We are only told we are somewhere in the South Pacific.
