National Comic Book Day 2017: Comic book love and obsession

OMG! It is National Comic Book Day 2017 and as I furiously type the day is nearly over!

As I think of things to type, I am only aware of the ticking of the clock!

I only found out late in the day that it was National Comic Book Day when I got an email (that I can no longer find) giving five ways to celebrate. I decided to make the above video and discuss why we love/are obsessed with comic books?

I suppose we could get obsessed with anything but comic books for me were always this visually appealing medium that also always satisfied my desire for story.  In the first grade, I started to develop a taste for mythology. While I was raised Catholic, the idea of the Greek gods always fascinated me? In one sense, I could buy into the idea that myths were simply away of explaining natural events prior to the development of reason and the scientific method, on the other hand, the characters in the myths had needs and desires I could comprehend. Luckily, I hadn't read the Metamorphosis by Ovid back then because that would have put me right off the myths, and maybe that was Ovid's point, to move people away from these capricious gods that sometimes punished humans, many times by turning them into trees, for the most minor or reasons.

But I digress. The introduction of the comic book was the re-introduction of the old gods into the modern world. Everybody from Christopher Knowles to Grant Morrison say so. But what is the appeal? The Mayan Popol Vuh has beautiful illustrations and reminds me most of the modern day comic book of all the ancient forms of art on cave walls or pottery I have scene. The Egyptians come in a near second.

Reading Marvel: The Untold Story, as far as I am so far, which is the Jim Shooter era, it is clear that the professionals are as affected by the obsession/love of comics as the fans. When creators like Jack Kirby are seemingly cheated by the machine that is, or was, the publishing business is infuriating! Give Jack back his art! But it's too late for him, isn't it?

At any rate, it is nearly 9:30 PM where I am writing and only 2 and 1/2 hours remain on this national comic book day. How did you celebrate? Why are you obsessed/love sick over comics?

Let me know below or in the comments of the video.

Much love this National Comic Book Day and may all our favorite characters grow and expand and continue to be, in spite of the controversies.

From The Pile Episode 4: The Flash 42:"Night of the Mechanical Zombies"

Today I bring you The Flash #42 from 1990 by William Messner-Loebs, Greg La Rocque, and Jose Martin Jr. "Night of the Mechanical Zombies" starts off with a nice philosophical discussion comparing a computer's creation of cyber-space-time with a human being's creation of space-time. Unfortunately, I didn't know all the characters. I didn't read the Flash. Even now I have read very little Flash and am mostly familiar with the character through the 1990 and current TV show. That being said, I really enjoyed this story. It had so many cool elements to it, like the opening monolog I mentioned above and then we have a woman whose name I never learned, who is inhabited by the ghost of an ancient Irish Bard named Seamus. We get a brief glimpse of Wally West's then-girlfriend who is a supermodel who sells cat food named Connie. And then we have our heroine who's name is Tina, a former girlfriend of Wally West. This story does a great job of buil...

Omnibus Report for the week of October 15, 2017

We have three omnibuses to preview this weekend all three scheduled to be released on Tuesday, October 17, 2017. We will follow this report up with an unboxing of all three. Starting off this list is the conclusion to DC's New 52 Justice League and that is  Justice League: The Darkseid War Saga Omnibus by Geoff Johns, Jason Fabok and Francis Manapul. Weighing in at 512 pages this volume collects Justice League #40-50, Justice League: Darkseid War Special #1, Divergence #1, and Darkseid War 1-6. I've managed to remain mainly spoiler-free on the story here. I will say, I have read Trinity War and Forever Evil, and I found both those stories a lot of fun so I am expecting this to be a lot of fun too. Also for DC fans this week, comes  Batman/The Flash: The Button Deluxe Edition by Tom King, Joshua Williamson, Jason Fabok, and Howard Porter. This volume is 104 pages and collects Batman #21-22 and The Flash #21-22. This story sounds like a great deal of fun but I am...

Jack Kirby's Fourth World Omnibus Drops 12/12/2017

As I said in one of my previous videos, the main reason I started this channel is to keep other people who interested in omnibus editions up-to-date with upcoming titles. Especially the ones I am most interested in. Now at any given time there are a boatload of new and reprinted omnibuses coming out as well as collected editions, collected editions usually being the trade paperback that generally contains 6-8 issues of a given title. Sometimes collected editions are lumped in with omnibuses but an omnibus is usually an event comic that contains the main event title and all the related tie-ins. Other times an omnibus will contain an entire run of a title or, as in the case of my most highly anticipated omnibus of the next few months, an entire line of comics. Currently scheduled to be released on December 12, 2017 and part of the Kirby 100 celebration is  Jack Kirby's Fourth World Omnibus   is my number one 'get' of all the upcoming omnibuses. It is impossible to und...
