Super Comic Fun Time! Presents: Thingism 101

The Comic Book World is replete with things. At least three Things I can think of off the top of my head: The Man-Thing, The Swamp Thing, and Ben Grimm aka The Thing. And it's a well known rule of academia that if you have three things that may be only tangentially related, you can make a class out of it! Outside of comics we have a few cultural "Things", in 1893, Ambrose Bierce published a story called The Damned Thing about a hunter who comes to discover he is hunting some sort of Thing that is a color outside the range of human sight. In 1951, Howard Hawks released a movie, an opera, really, an opera without music called The Thing from Another World starring James Arnes in the title role of The Thing. In this movie, based on the novella by John W. Campbell Jr. called Who Goes There? which, itself is a tidy little bit of cosmic horror inspired by H. P. Lovecraft, an alien spaceship is discovered in Antarctica, the scientists start excavating and discover t...

SFCT Halloween Special Suppliment

Happy Halloween Comic Readers! So, in supplementation with Super Comic Fun Time's "As Spectacular As It Gets" Halloween Special we look at some horror comics! Or, at least, what we hoped would be horror comics: First up is True Blood #1 from IDW written by Ann Nocenti and Michael McMillian. True Blood was a TV series that ran on HBO from 2008 - 2014 based on a series of novels known as the Sookie Stackhouse mysteries. A competent comic but the world is a little obvious. More groan-worthy than fun. In this world, a synthetic blood is created and the vampires come out of their coffins. There are no subtle allusions going on here, it is all in your face. Vampires are just like us, except if it weren't for a synthetic blood product known as True Blood, then the vampires would be preying on us. This story is set on the vampire holiday of Coffin Night when vampires celebrate their liberation by burning their coffins. Sookie is a waitress and she is late be...

Something's In The Box 4: Doctor Strange, Sorcerer Supreme Omnibus Vol. 1

So, this week I didn't have anything ordered but I still have a couple of boxes waiting around for a video opening. Arriving at my door on July 18, 2017, the Doctor Strange Sorcerer Supreme Omnibus Vol. 1 collects Doctor Strange Sorcerer Supreme 1-40 and Ghost Rider 12 and weighing in at 1,064 page, this volume looks beautiful. I'm not sure exactly what the story is for this series but it appears that Doctor Strange is either dead, or thought to be dead. Flipping through the book, the pages look beautiful and Doctor Strange is sporting a wild hairdo on some pages that I highlight in the video. It even looks like Clea is back! As always, this episode features a poorly drawn cartoon and a small fight against the "Uhs!" I think they are finally in retreat! But ever must we remain vigilant! As always, hit the "thumbs up!" subscribe, and if you have read this volume or have any other opinions on Doctor Strange, leave your comments! And remember t...

From the Pile Episode #5: Beavis and Butthead #8

Today From the Pile takes you back to that gilded year of 1994! The Cold War has been over for about two years.  The biggest trend in music has been grunge but that's all about to be over with the death of Curt Cobain. Natalie Portman will make her big screen debut in Luc Bisson's Leon: The Professional and Quentin Tarantino will will change and influence films for the next twenty years with the release of his second feature, Pulp Fiction. Quentin Tarantino's 1994 hit, Pulp Fiction 1994 will introduce the world to future Thor co-star, Natalie Portman in Leon: The professional Meanwhile on MTV, music hasn't been totally abandoned yet but they are pioneering reality TV with their Real World and are jumping on the animation train that started with the Simpsons in 1989 with the release Beavis and Butt-head in 1993. Beavis and Butt-Head #8 Beavis and Butt-Head was created by Mike Judge who would go on to create the long-running King of the Hill and The G...

Omnibus Report for the week of 10/22/2017

This week on the omnibus front there are very slim pickings but one of them looks to be a real gem for DC Comics fans. On 10/24/2017  Grayson: The Superspy Omnibus by Tom King, Tim Seeley, and Mikel Janin. This grand tome weighs in at 792 pages and collects Grayson 1-20, Grayson:Futures End 1, Secret Origins 8, Grayson Annual 1-3, Robin War 1-2, and Nightwing: Rebirth 1. Dick Grayson is one of the oldest and most beloved characters in the history of DC Comics starting out in 1940 as Batman's sidekick and has probably had the most career changes of any long term DC character except for Jimmy Olson, most probably. I first met Dick Grayson as Burt Ward portrayed him in the 1960s Batman TV series. As seen on TV, Dick was an energetic teen who was nearly as intelligent as Batman himself. In the early 1970s, in the comic book, Dick went off to college and decided to hang up the mantle of Robin for a bit while Bruce moved into a downtown penthouse as the comic book sought to...

Something's In The Box 3: Justice League:The Darkseid War Saga Omnibus

Today, Darkseid landed on my doorstep, well, Justice League: The Darkseid War Saga Omnibus to be a little more accurate. In front of your dazzled eyes, we open the box! We flip through the book! We make mostly relevant comments! We are awed by some of the art we see! If you've already read this in it's original single issue state, let me know what you thought!

From the Pile Episode 2: Justice League International Annual #3 by Keith Griffen and J. M. DeMatteis

This week I picked DC Comics Justice League International(JLI) Annual #3 by Keith Griffen and J. M. DeMatteis. One reason I chose this title is I will probably be a little Marvel-centric for the next few videos and I wanted to throw a little love to the die-hard DC Fans. And you have to be a die-hard DC fan for this one, at least the main story. Around the World with the JLI takes up 33 pages of this book and nearly nothing happens. The story opens on the beautiful Pacific island of Kooey Kooey Kooey where a character named Herb is trying to convince his chief to allow the JLI to have an embassy on their island as a way of keeping the Soviets and Americans from attempting to establish a base there because Kooey Kooey Kooey is strategically located. What its strategic importance is, we aren't told. We are only told we are somewhere in the South Pacific. Herb is the uptight sort while the chief likes to make dumb jokes and tell Herb to lighten up. The chief thinks inviting th...

Reaction In Action Episode 3: Black Panther Trailer

Super Comic Fun Time isn't over yet! I have a Black Panther movie trailer to react you on Reaction in Action Episode 3. I guess my biggest reaction was confusion not being overly familiar with Black Panther. I know a bit of the lore. I know the Submariner practically destroyed Wakanda. But I have no idea what the story in this movie is going to be from watching the trailer. Like T'challa is the king now and is he fighting his brother? Why? Looks cool I just don't get what the story is from the trailer. He's the Black Panther and he's fighting someone. Is he going to talk to the ghosts of the previous kings? Don't know. Well, we have Thor: Ragnarok to get through first before they start giving trailers that tell the story,  I guess.

Something's In The Box 2: World War Hulk and Walt Simonson's Thor

Arriving on my porch and therefore in your feed one day early, the postman brought me the World War Hulk By Greg Pak and Walt Simonson's Thor omnibuses! We open the box, de-cellophane the tomes one at a time and we flip through them while I make random comments. As covered in Omnibus Report for the week of October 15, 2017 It was a great deal of fun to make this video for you. I hope you enjoyed it! From The Pile Episode 4: The Flash 42:"Night of the Mechanical Zombies"

Today I bring you The Flash #42 from 1990 by William Messner-Loebs, Greg La Rocque, and Jose Martin Jr. "Night of the Mechanical Zombies" starts off with a nice philosophical discussion comparing a computer's creation of cyber-space-time with a human being's creation of space-time. Unfortunately, I didn't know all the characters. I didn't read the Flash. Even now I have read very little Flash and am mostly familiar with the character through the 1990 and current TV show. That being said, I really enjoyed this story. It had so many cool elements to it, like the opening monolog I mentioned above and then we have a woman whose name I never learned, who is inhabited by the ghost of an ancient Irish Bard named Seamus. We get a brief glimpse of Wally West's then-girlfriend who is a supermodel who sells cat food named Connie. And then we have our heroine who's name is Tina, a former girlfriend of Wally West. This story does a great job of buil...

Omnibus Report for the week of October 15, 2017

We have three omnibuses to preview this weekend all three scheduled to be released on Tuesday, October 17, 2017. We will follow this report up with an unboxing of all three. Starting off this list is the conclusion to DC's New 52 Justice League and that is  Justice League: The Darkseid War Saga Omnibus by Geoff Johns, Jason Fabok and Francis Manapul. Weighing in at 512 pages this volume collects Justice League #40-50, Justice League: Darkseid War Special #1, Divergence #1, and Darkseid War 1-6. I've managed to remain mainly spoiler-free on the story here. I will say, I have read Trinity War and Forever Evil, and I found both those stories a lot of fun so I am expecting this to be a lot of fun too. Also for DC fans this week, comes  Batman/The Flash: The Button Deluxe Edition by Tom King, Joshua Williamson, Jason Fabok, and Howard Porter. This volume is 104 pages and collects Batman #21-22 and The Flash #21-22. This story sounds like a great deal of fun but I am...

Omnibus Report: Swamp Thing: The Bronze Age Omnibus Vol. 1

Swamp Thing Bronze Age Omnibus due out 10/10/2017 Exactly one month after the death of Len Wein and 17 days before what would have been Bernie Wrightson's 69th birthday comes the first omnibus of their co-creation: Swamp Thing: The Bronze Age Omnibus Vol. 1  due out on Tuesday October 10. Swamp Thing original appeared in DC Comic's horror anthology The House Of Secrets #92 in July 1971 and going on to star in his own series, Swamp Thing, in 1972 with the first 10 issues being drawn by Wrightson. In essence, the story of the Swamp Thing is that of a man who is transformed into a monster after a traumatic experience. In the main series, Alec Holland has created a formula that can transform deserts into forests and some bad guys want to steal it so they plant a bomb in Alec's lab. When the bomb goes off, Alec is  covered in the formula and thrown into the bayou where he is resurrected as the Swamp Thing. Swamp Thing would go on to star in two movies and a half-ho...
